Metropolitan Square: A 43-story building in downtown St.
Louis
PROFILE:
Metropolitan Square Building
Customer: Metropolitan Life
Description: Installed air conditioning system in this 43-story office tower, including three rooftop cooling towers hoisted in six separate components, three centrifugal chillers capable of 800 tons of cooling each, four chilled water pumps, four condenser water pumps, eight large air handling units capable of 80,250 CFM each, and 30 truckloads of fabricated pipe and ductwork. The total system has a capacity of 3,200 tons, which could cool 800 to 1000 three-bedroom homes.
Unusual Features: Located in a crowded section of the city's business district, there was no room at the site for trailers or stockpipling equipment. Also, the tower crane was in use full time during normal working hours. To overcome these problems, Corrigan used a specially designed platform for hoisting up to 70,000 pounds at a time that can be anchored on the perimeter of the structural framework at different floors. Further, a system of packaging all fittings and pipe to each piece of corresponding equipment and hoisting them in a just-in-time manner in a specially made basket was utilized. The 43-story hoist of the cooling tower components (field assembled), three tons of weight each, was accomplished using special rigging.
